When the Sotho say, “Lebitla la ngoan’e motona le ka thoko ho tsela (The grave of a young man is by the side of the road)”, it seems that he was looking closely at the life that Lerashea lived according to what Lebelo Posholi wrote. Often, we remember a person by his greatness and his deeds, but we forget more that what made him who he is, is how he was raised. This book by Lerashea, shows us the search that we always see as Basotho children. Our friends, our relatives, and even our spouses have left home in order to look for a little bit of money in South Africa, and this is due to the great lack of a way to make a living here at home. Sometimes, it is not because they are truly in need, but they are let down by those they trusted to provide for them or help them overcome life.
This young man, Lerashea, whose real name is Mohale, but unfortunately and due to the life he lived and became known as Lerashea, was deliberately and maliciously abused by his biological father, and it is no wonder that his ‘aunt’ also played a role. As the eldest son of his family, he took on the responsibility of taking care of his siblings who were suffering from the neglect of his alcoholic ‘aunt’ and his father. According to research and what we often see, children who grow up in a family that is considered undeveloped, rarely succeed in a prosperous life, even if they themselves could aspire to a happy life. Their actions and feelings are in line with what they grew up seeing in their home. This book shows us these issues well.
Lerashea is a hero. Although he fell into the trap of a miserable life, he lived as a hero and a beast among those he lived with. This taught me that, always fight for what I want to live. It has become a condition that will determine whether I live well or badly.
